Tokoname-yaki

常滑焼

Tokoname-yaki is made in Tokoname, Aichi Prefecture. It is one of the 6 Ancient Kilns and dates back to the 12th century. With time, production methods were developed and pottery became a major economical part of the region. Industrial products such as water pipelines and storage pots for oil and gasoline became important during war time but nowadays, Tokonmame-yaki is mostly know for its smooth surfaced redware teapots.

The high proportion of iron in the clay leads to the beautiful red color after firing and is said to smoothen the bitterness of teas.

The Asemi Co. Tokoname-yaki cups are made by the artisan Yuji Koie.
