Seto-yaki

Tanba-yaki

Map_Tanba.jpg

Tamba-yaki is pottery produced in Tamba Sasayama, located in the central eastern part of Hyogo Prefecture.

It is characterized by its brown clay and simple texture. Although it is rugged, it fits comfortably in the hand and has a natural warmth. The red clay used in Tamba ware is not generally available due to limited quantities. Along with Shigaraki ware, Tokoname ware, Seto ware, Bizen ware, and Echizen ware, which were all opened in the same period, it is one of the Six Ancient Kilns of Japan and has a long history that has been passed down to the present day.
